It is also nice to see the return of one of my old favourites, Jens Lekman, whom Melbourne has adopted as our own over the past few years! New LP on the way later this year, of which buying and supporting Jens is a no brainer. Jens is keeping alive the soulful and melancholic singer/songwriter, and most importantly, the vocalist, that is so sorely missing in modern times.

This is lovely. They continue to reminds me of David Byrne’s vocal style, and the past 2 years seems to have been kind to their evolution of sound in a minimalistic sense. Can’t wait for the full album.

Bullion is channeling Robert Wyatt on his latest EP ‘Love Me Oh Please Love Me’. Collision is one of my favourite tracks off it. It is quite off kilter and in a completely opposite direction compared to Bullion’s sample based mash ups of the past, but I really like the direction he is going.

R.I.P. Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch

The Beastie Boys made music that is and has been incredibly influential for me. Ever since I was a young teenager, whose music taste was still yet to be discovered, to now, where my musical taste has become as eclectic as the sampling heard on ‘Paul’s Boutique’. From being obsessed with ‘C-C-Check it out’ (I watched the music video and listened to the track as soon as i got home from high school for a long time - this is pre-itunes) and the album ‘To the Five Boroughs’, to buying ‘Paul’s Botique’ and being exposed to some of the most ingenious genre defieing hip hop I had ever experience, to brancing out and enjoying their more obscure material (their instrumental album ‘The In Sound from Way Out being a highlight, and who could forget the rarity ‘Netty’s Girl’ and accompanying video from ‘The Sounds of Science Anthology’? MCA always felt, to me, like the wise head of the group - a deeper voice and more focused style seperated him from Ad Rock and Mike D. I am deeply saddened that I never got to see them live as a group, but the music will live on.

MCA died far too young, and had so much more to give as a musician and a human being. Rest in peace.

XXXY - I Know This (Can’t Be Love)

This song is AMAZING. I put the vinyl, which I got last week, onto the turntable as I was doing some housework, and I swear I had this song on repeat for a good hour. The neighbours are either really annoyed at me or are having a dance party because of this tune! Outstanding stuff - so far the lead-runner for best 12” of 2012.

Danny Brown - Bruiser Brigade

This album is off the chain. Danny Brown is one of the most vicious and interesting rappers I’ve heard recently, and although his music could put many people off due to its in-your-face pornographic nature, I actually love it. It’s like a breath of fresh air in the scene. XXX, his second album, just got released on vinyl (limited release), so get on it!
